The process of obtaining a driving license in Cyprus includes two possible paths:
- Exchanging an existing driving license (for example, an EU or UK driving license, subject to post-Brexit regulations).
- Applying for a first driving license requires proof of residence, documentation, a medical certificate, and passing both theoretical and practical exams.
The exchange of an existing driving license will be completed within 2-3 weeks of submitting proof of residence and documentation.
Getting your first driving license takes approximately 6-10 weeks if the process begins immediately upon arrival.
For holders of a valid UK photo ID license in 2025, no theory or practical exams are required.
The Opportunity
Both clients were starting new roles and could not afford delays: the UK client needed a Cyprus driving licence to be covered under her employer’s corporate motor insurance, and the French client needed a first-time licence to commute to school from day one. Cyprus rules are clear, but strictly sequential: secure the appropriate proof of residence, book an appointment with the Department of Road Transport. If you’re a first-time applicant—pass the theory test before the practical.
Our role was to keep the process predictable, tightly documented, and aligned with the employment start dates.
The Solution
Client profile: UK founder, licence exchange
Who qualifies:
Valid, legible UK photocard licence holder now resident in Cyprus (residence card/permit + proof of address). If documents are in order, the exchange is without re-testing.
What we did (step-by-step):
Residency & address – Secured residence registration and two proofs of address (tenancy + recent utility/bank letter).
Application pack – Prepared passport, UK photocard (front/back), biometric photos to Cyprus spec, completed form, and a signed statement of categories held.
Health clearance (if required) – For higher categories or age-based triggers, we arranged the statutory doctor’s certificate. Not needed for a standard Category B within normal age limits.
Appointment & handover – Booked the District Road Transport Department / Citizen Service Centre; client handed in the UK licence and received a stamped receipt.
Issue – Temporary driving slip issued on the spot; plastic Cyprus licence card followed shortly after.
Result:
Company car insurance was bound the same week the temporary slip was issued; the plastic card arrived with no queries.
Client profile: EU citizen, first-time Cyprus licence (Category B)
Who qualifies:
EU nationals resident in Cyprus, age 18+, meeting the standard medical fitness requirements.
What we did (step-by-step):
Residency & ID – Completed residence registration and collected two proofs of address at the outset.
Learner permit – Filed the application with ID, biometric photos, and fee; learner status issued without delay.
Theory – Enrolled the client in a condensed prep course and booked the computer-based test (choice of English or Greek).
Driving lessons – Arranged 10–15 focused sessions covering Cyprus road layouts, right-of-way rules, junctions, and motorway entry/exit practice.
Practical test – Scheduled immediately after passing theory; client drilled in parallel parking, hill starts, hazard perception, and route planning.
Issuance – Licence printed as a plastic card, valid to the statutory age limit with renewals thereafter.
Result:
From zero to fully licensed in ~8 weeks – perfectly aligned with the start of the school term and delivery of the client’s new car.
Licence Costs and Validity Periods
Application/issue fees are modest; add exam fees for first-timers and any medical fee for age/category cases.
Validity runs to the standard statutory limit, with more frequent renewals thereafter; higher categories often have shorter renewal cycles and medicals.
Translations are rarely needed for UK/EU licences, but we prepare certified translations if any supporting document isn’t in English or Greek.
